Why is the NBA third in popularity behind NFL and MLB? Best Answer - Chosen by Asker I think it's because of the way that the NBA defines its fan base. The NBA has fans by eras, you have the Magic Johnson/Larry Bird era, then the Michael Jordan era, and then you had the Kobe/Shaq era and now you're having the LeBron/Wade era. The NBA goes out of its way to promote these individuals or specific rivalries. Whereas w/ the NFL and MLB you have people that are fans of a TEAM. The Dawg Pound in Cleveland, the Cheeseheads in GB, Raider Nation in Oakland...or the Yankees, the Red Sox, the Braves. These fans don't define themselves based on a set of players but on the team. Granted there might be one player that's the face of the team but regardless, players come and go and these fans remain loyal through generations.
